Nascar is set to drop Mexico City from its 2026 Cup Series schedule, according The Athletic.
The logistical effort involved in taking Nascar over the border into Mexico and finding a suitable date for the race have reportedly contributed to the decision. Efforts are now set to shift to finding a suitable slot in 2027.
Mexico City became Nascar’s first international points-paying event in the modern era in June this season, but that date is not available next year due to the 2026 Fifa World Cup, which is being held across Canada, Mexico and the US.

The Athletic added that conversations were held around a double-header weekend with both Nascar and IndyCar racing in Mexico, before Nascar decided to focus on a 2027 return.
The decision gives IndyCar breathing room to develop its own event in Mexico, which is expected to feature on the series’ 2026 schedule. IndyCar president Doug Boles told BlackBook Motorsport in June that there is an expectation that “hopefully we get our event announced here soon.”
Nascar has already announced that a visit in San Diego will be part of next season’s schedule. As has long been rumoured, a return to Chicagoland Speedway appears likely. This would help maintain Nascar’s presence in Illinois following the decision to pause the Chicago Street Race for next season.
As with Mexico City, the intention is to return in 2027.
