HOUSTON – Students who need help with essential services outside of the classroom will now have access to another Sunrise Center.
On Friday, HISD Superintendent Mike Miles joined city leaders for the soft opening of their Marian Sunrise Center.
The facility is located in the Marian Park Community Center in Southwest Houston.
Sunrise Centers are the new solution for families in need to access services like free school supplies, clothing and health services.
“While our main mission in the classroom is to help a kid read, we get that it has to be more than that, it has to be the whole child,” Superintendent Miles said.
This marks the eighth center to open in the City, all of which are integrated in existing places, like a parks and recreation building.
HISD says the facilities cost roughly $7 million per year and service 30,000 kids.
“We’ve seen some great results. We see families coming to Sunrise Center’s multiple times. We’re seeing that have a positive impact on the students attendance on the student’s behavior,” said Najah Callender of HISD’s Family and Community Partnerships team.
Tackling truancy is a highlight of Sunrise Centers.
Superintendent Miles also hinted that there is news coming from inside the classroom, too.
“We just got our accountability results from TEA, the preliminary, yesterday. I can’t tell you. I will tell you [on] Tuesday. But they’re good. They’re even better than the year before, so we’ll announce those results specifically on Tuesday.”
