Britney Spears may have defined a generation’s worth of pop music, but at the end of the day, “nothing makes [her] happier” than her two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James. The “Toxic” singer shares her boys with her ex-husband Kevin Federline, who was awarded majority custody when the duo divorced in 2007, per People.
“It’s hard enough to be in a marriage, and then have a kid, then kids, it changes everything,” Federline told People in a 2008 interview. “For me, I’d become more concerned with my children. Not that I ignored Britney, but my kids are always most important.”
Spears and Federline tied the knot in 2004 after meeting at a club in Hollywood. The newlyweds welcomed their eldest son Sean in 2005 followed by Jayden in 2006. After going their separate ways, their dad told People that he wanted the kids to have a “normal” childhood.
“The first couple years of their life they were all over the place,” he said. “My main thing for my kids is that they get to live life the way—or as close to the way—that most people do.”

Their mother, meanwhile, revealed in her 2023 memoir that she traded her “freedom” for access to her children during her 13-year conservatorship, per an excerpt shared with People. From 2008—2021, Spears’s father Jamie had control over her personal and financial affairs. “After being held down on a gurney, I knew they could restrain my body any time they wanted to,” she wrote in The Woman in Me. “And so I went along with it.”

Sean Preston Federline arrived on September 14, 2005, just one year after Spears and Federline tied the knot. Spears was 23 years old at the time. Her eldest son now goes by his middle name.
“We are ecstatic to announce the birth of our son!” the former couple said in a statement, per People. “Everyone is happy, healthy and doing wonderful. Thank you all for your love and well wishes!”
Preston joined Spears on the red carpet for the first time in 2013, when he and his brother attended the Smurfs 2 premiere. He later accompanied his mom on the road for her “Piece of Me” tour in 2018, according to People.

In a 2015 interview with People, Spears described her firstborn as “very expressive” and “very opinionated.”
“If he doesn’t like something, he’s going to tell you,” she told the publication. “But he has a huge heart, he’s a good kid and he has manners.”
His dad, meanwhile, told People that Preston was “sensitive,” adding, “his feelings get hurt real easy.” Federline continued, “He is the one that is always under my wing; he doesn’t want to go anywhere without Daddy.”
The mom-of-two also revealed that her eldest plays football and loves skateboarding and gymnastics. “I love watching them play sports and just running around with them,” she told People.

As for whether or not he’ll follow in his mom’s footsteps? Preston has already tried his hand at becoming a DJ, Federline told People in 2015. He also plays piano (Spears once called him “a lil Mozart“).
“I showed him a little bit of stuff, but I want him to figure it out on his own,” Federline said in the same interview. “There are certain things I do need to show him, but he’s got a good ear, he really does. It will be interesting to see where he’s at in a couple of years.”

Almost exactly one year later, Preston become a big brother with the arrival of Jayden James. on September 12, 2006. The “Circus” singer later described him to People as “sweet, very soft-spoken, [and] kinda funny.”
“He’s adorable—a momma’s boy,” she told People. Spears filed for divorced that November, when Jayden was just two months old. Federline later told People that he wanted his kids to “have a mom and love her.”
“It’s good for the kids to see that Daddy does care about Mommy, and Mommy does care about Daddy,” he said in the aforementioned 2008 People interview. “Because no matter what happens, there is only going to be one mother and one father to these children.”

In the same interview, Federline jokingly described his son as a “little terror,” adding, “if Preston is picking on him—well, usually it’s not Preston that’s picking on him—he’ll just go and terrorize the whole house. For no reason at all.”
In 2022, Spears gushed about Jayden’s musical talent in a since-deleted Instagram post, writing “his gift scares me.” “Jayden can play jazz 🎷 and literally anything on the piano 🎹 !!!” She added, per Today.

Like Preston, Jayden has joined his mom on tour and visited her at her Las Vegas residency, which took place from 2013—2017. In 2023, both Jayden and Preston moved to Hawaii with his brother, his dad, his dad’s wife Victoria, and the couple’s daughters, Jordan and Peyton. The move was made in part to “get away from the L.A. microscope,” Federline’s attorney told People. In November of 2024, People reported that Jayden visited his mom in Los Angeles. That December, Preston joined him in spending Christmas with their mom. “Best Christmas of my life !!!” Spears wrote on Instagram.
