An Auburn resident contacted 8 Investigates after seeing a trash truck empty recycling and trash bins into what appeared to be the same part of the truck.
Casella Waste Systems began using new trucks in Auburn a few months ago. From the street, it can look as if both bins are dumped together. But the truck has a divider in the middle, and the driver flips it so recycling and trash go into separate sides. It’s called a split system.
Casella Waste Systems said the trucks make collection more efficient because the company doesn’t need to send two trucks along the same route.
So keep sorting your recycling.
If you have the same concern about your trash provider, ask the company whether it uses trucks with split system technology.
