A former NFL player has reportedly died in an “awful” car accident at 33 years old.

Chandler Jones, a former Canadian Football League star who also played in the National Football League, passed away over the weekend, according to reports. The former NFL player turned CFL star was killed in a pedestrian car accident in Los Angeles on Sunday morning.

The former NFL player starred collegiately at San Jose State. He then played in the National Football League for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Indianapolis Colts, and Cleveland Browns, as a wide receiver.

Jones found his way to the CFL following his time in the National Football League. He played for the Montreal Alouettes before getting into coaching. Jones was the assistant defensive backs coach for the Alouettes in 2023 and ’24, helping the team win the Grey Cup – Canada’s Super Bowl – in his first season.

Montreal general manager Danny Maciocia announced the news on Tuesday morning.

“Our thoughts are with Chandler’s family and loved ones as they navigate this incredibly difficult time,” Maciocia said in a statement. “We extend our heartfelt condolences and offer them our full support.”

Jones previously worked as a coach for San Jose State and the College of Idaho at the college level. He was a standout performer at the college level. Jones caught 79 passes for 1,356 yards and 15 touchdowns in his final collegiate season, earning a first-team All-Mountain West selection.
