Damian Lillard played at Weber State from 2008-2012 and won Big Sky Player of the Year twice before launching his NBA career.

Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard is returning to his alma mater, Weber State, to serve as the general manager, the team announced Saturday night.

Lillard made the announcement Saturday night in Ogden, Utah, where he hosted the Weber State Basketball Alumni Classic. The 13-year NBA veteran adds his new role just two weeks after agreeing to return to the Trail Blazers on a three-year deal.

“My relationship with coach (Eric) Duft and this program means a lot to me, and seeing the success of the program means a lot to me,” Lillard said during an appearance at the school’s campus, via Brett Hein of the Standard-Examiner. “I feel like I can do a lot to help the program be successful, to help the players even individually continue to grow their careers past college, that’s something that I’m passionate about.”

As general manager, Lillard will work closely with the coaching staff and athletic department leadership to provide insight, mentorship, and guidance, using his experience at the collegiate and professional levels to elevate the program.

Lillard played at Weber State from 2008-12 and was named the Big Sky Player of the Year twice and earned First Team All-Big Sky honors three times. He was also named a Third Team All-American as a senior and has his No. 1 jersey number retired by the university.

A nine-time All-Star, Lillard is currently is rehabbing from a left Achilles tendon tear suffered in April and is unlikely to play in 2025-26.
