PHOENIX – A woman is dead, and a man is behind bars after a shooting in North Phoenix. The incident happened near 40th Street and Bell Road on August 1.

Investigators continue to search for clues at the crime scene, which was surrounded by police vehicles and crime tape.

What we know:

Police say a woman was shot several times at the residence around 6 a.m. and later died at an area hospital.

The male suspect was arrested after driving to Gila Bend, more than an hour away. He was taken into custody by county deputies, Department of Public Safety troopers, ADOT and Border Patrol.

What they’re saying:

Neighbors say there was always something strange about the house. It’s a little hard to tell one home from the next along Meadow Drive, but one home always stood out – the one on the corner.

“It’s quiet, it’s friendly around here. You know we’re not necessarily all that close. But very friendly.. wave at each other, said Jamie, who has lived in the neighborhood for 11 years, and has noticed issues at the address before. From multiple cameras pointing in all possible directions, to tinfoil covering the doors and windows, and a story about the resident waving a gun at a dog walker.

“The guy pulled out the doggy bag to go clean it up, and once that actually happened, a gentleman at that house reached over with a gun and said, ‘Let your dog do that in my yard,'” Jamie said.

The news is startling for Amy, who just moved in a few weeks ago.

“It’s concerning because I have a child at home, and when we go on walks, we typically go around that area, so it’s a little scary,” she said.

As for Jamie, you could call him shocked and sad, but not so surprised.

“It’s obviously concerning being that it’s right there, not too far from where my house is, but there are some people that are a little nuts and there are some neighbors that sometimes, even though it’s a great neighborhood, you always have that one,” he said.

What we don’t know:

Police have not yet released the identities of the victim or the suspect, or a possible motive. They expect to release more details in the coming days.

What’s next:

Homicide detectives are investigating what led up to the shooting.
