LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Louisville’s indie music scene is stepping into the national spotlight, with two hometown artists releasing major albums and playing back-to-back shows at Whirling Tiger this week.

Wombo, a three-piece art-rock band praised by outlets like Rolling Stone and Pitchfork, will release their latest album on Friday and kick off a national tour shortly after. They’re set to perform at Whirling Tiger on Thursday, August 8, with local musician Grace Rogers opening the show.

Just two nights earlier, Ryan Davis, known for his work with the band State Champion, will take the same stage to celebrate the release of his new solo album. The record features contributions from several local artists, including Rogers, and is already gaining buzz for its experimental sound and deep Louisville roots.

“This feels like a real moment for Louisville music,” said Davis. “It’s exciting to do something new — and to do it surrounded by friends.”

Veteran WFPK DJ Kyle Meredith calls Wombo “one of the best bands in Louisville right now,” and says the back-to-back shows are more than a coincidence — they’re a reflection of a local scene gaining national attention.

With both acts headed out on tour, and a strong lineup of local openers and collaborators, many are asking: is Louisville’s next musical breakout already underway?

Wombo plays Whirling Tiger on August 8. Ryan Davis performs August 6. Tickets available through the venue.
