RCMP release:

Eskasoni RCMP responded to a vehicle-pedestrian collision in Eskasoni.

On August 1, at approximately 1:40 p.m., RCMP officers, fire services, and EHS responded to a report of a collision on Gabriel St., where a GMC Sierra struck a woman and an infant on the sidewalk before fleeing the scene.

The pedestrians, a 25-year-old woman and an infant from Eskasoni, both sustained life-threatening injuries. They were transported to hospital by EHS.

En route to the scene, RCMP officers located the GMC truck near the intersection of 74th St. and Shore Rd., where a group of people had gathered. Based on information gathered at the scene, it was determined that the driver had fled on foot.

Shortly thereafter, RCMP officers located and safely arrested the driver, a 34-year-old man from Eskasoni, who was displaying signs of impairment. He was transported to the Eskasoni RCMP detachment where a drug evaluation was completed.

Earlier that morning, at approximately 7:55 a.m., Eskasoni RCMP had responded to a report of a possible impaired driver involving the same GMC Sierra. An extensive search for the vehicle, led by multiple officers, was unsuccessful.

Curtis Menge, 34, has been charged with:

  • Failure to Stop After Accident Resulting in Bodily Harm
  • Dangerous Operation Causing Bodily Harm (two counts)

Menge was remanded into custody. He’s scheduled to appear in Sydney Provincial Court on August 5.

The investigation is ongoing and additional criminal charges are anticipated.
