A man has been arrested and a murder investigation has been launched after a woman in her 60s was found in Sydney’s west with stab wounds to her chest.

The woman was found alive and paramedics were called to a unit on Hemphill Avenue in Mount Pritchard at 5.05pm, however she died at the scene.

Police said in a statement that the woman was yet to be formally identified, but she was believed to be aged in her 60s.

Officers from Fairfield City Police Area Command arrested a 28-year-old man at the scene. He was taken to Fairfield Police Station.

Police said it was understood the two were known to each other. A crime scene has been established and investigations into the woman’s death will involve the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad.
