The Big Bang Theory is one of the most famous sitcoms of all time, and continues to be popular even over six years after its finale. As the universe continues to expand, creator Chuck Lorre focused on different projects.
After creating two more additions to The Big Bang Theory universe, Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, Lorre has a new sitcom on Netflix: Leanne. The filmmaker co-created the show with Susan McMartin and Leanne Morgan, and it premiered on the streaming platform on Jul. 31. Shortly after its release, audiences gave Leanne an exciting, near-perfect 96% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes, marking a thrilling start for the new sitcom.
The enthusiastic 96% response comes from over 100 ratings, although it’s still in its early days. Among the subscribers’ opinions, the series is “so funny” and features a great cast and is well-written.
One person admitted “the first episode doesn’t land as well, but as the cast gels it gets better. Leanne is a hoot and I hope the show is renewed for more seasons!” A different fan compared it to the sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, and noted no other comedy was as funny as that show until Leanne.
A different user wrote, “I am so thrilled to see a show that is entertaining and a little spicy without preaching to the viewer about politics. I miss a comedy on television and was so disappointed when I had watched them all. I haven’t been as sad when a show ended as I was since Schitt’s Creek.”
The series also received encouraging reviews from the critics, as Leanne features a 77% approval score out of 13 reviews. Decider‘s Joel Keller points out “The cast starts clicking pretty quickly, especially Morgan and Johnston, and that goes a long way to upping number of genuine laughs each episode has.”
The Hollywood Reporter‘s Angie Han argued that, “If it’s rarely hilarious, it’s pleasant in a sturdy, old-fashioned way, with a back-to-basics reliance on likable characters and approachable chemistry over topical jokes or formal experimentation.” Variety‘s Alison Herman explained, “I may not be the target audience for Leanne, but I found much to like in it, and suspect many Netflix subscribers will as well.”
Among the criticism, Chicago Tribune‘s Nina Metz wrote, “There’s a deliberate pace to the show — and to the dialogue itself — that results in punchlines just laying there,” while The Daily Beast‘s Caroline Siede detailed, “How funny do you find jokes about Spanx being too tight and diets making you CRAZY? That’s your barometer for enjoying Leanne Morgan’s new show.”
What Is Leanne About?
The multi-camera sitcom is inspired by co-creator Leanne Morgan’s stand-up, and follows the titular character whose life is turned upside down when her husband of 33 years leaves her for another woman, with the help of her supportive, but unfiltered family. Aside from Morgan, Leanne’s ensemble cast includes Kristen Johnston, Celia Weston, Blake Clark, Ryan Stiles, and Graham Rogers.
Leanne Season 1 consists of 16 episodes and all of them are streaming on Netflix.
