MASON CITY, Iowa — A large buck crashed through a window at Hy-Vee East on Sunday morning, injuring a 5-year-old boy before employees managed to get the animal out of the store.
Mason City Police were called to the store at 551 S. Illinois Ave. at 11:14 a.m. Callers reported the deer was running around in the dining area.
Police Chief Mike McKelvey says the boy suffered minor injuries to his head or face area. Customers treated him before Mason City Fire medics arrived on scene at 11:19 a.m.
Responding officers say two Hy-Vee employees were able to wrangle the deer and shoo it out a back door before emergency responders got there. The deer ran off and its condition is unknown.
Blood was found on the floor inside the store, which investigators say they believe came mostly from the deer’s injuries. The boy and his parents live in Mason City.
