As many know by now, Stephen Colbert’s CBS show, The Late Show, will be cancelled by May 2026, sending a shock wave of worries throughout Hollywood and the future of public broadcasting. While we still have time before he says his final goodbye on the iconic late-night show, he’s seemingly got another gig lined up (and it’s a unique take on the late-night show gig he’s done for years).

In case you missed it, Vulture reported that Colbert is expected to guest star on CBS’s dramedy Elsbeth. Elsbeth is about an unconventional attorney helping the NYPD solve grizzly murders, and it uses characters from beloved shows like The Good Wife and The Good Fight.

Now, insiders claimed to the outlet that this cheeky guest appearance “was almost surely planned” before CBS’s announcement about canceling his show due to financial strain. Plus, apparently, Colbert repeatedly asked to be a part of the show, saying: “I want to be the body that’s found behind the pile of lettuce boxes or something like that.”

And this isn’t the first time he’s played a late-night show host on TV, or in film.

For instance, he made a cameo as himself for The Morning Show, Strangers with Candy, BoJack Horseman, and Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law. So, he’s definitely got the training down for this upcoming role!
