The Boston Celtics Summer League action offered them an opportunity to take a closer look at some of their younger players. However, the guy who stole the attention in the early going was veteran center Charles Bassey.

A second-round pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, Bassey has spent the past three seasons with the San Antonio Spurs after initially spending one year with the Philadelphia 76ers. A surprise late addition to Boston’s Summer League roster, Bassey averaged 15.3 points and 11 rebounds over the team’s first three games.

Bassey departed from the team after their first three games, as that turned out to be the length of his contract. Since then, he’s generated interest from clubs overseas, but it appears his preference would be to stay in the NBA.

Given his dominant play, fans have pushed for the team to sign Bassey to their roster, but it hasn’t happened yet. However, if the team were to reach out to him, Bassey would reportedly be all ears.

“Charles Bassey would especially love to sign with the Celtics if the opportunity presented itself,” Celtics insider Noa Dalzell reported on “You Got Boston.”

The Celtics recently created a roster spot when they waived guard JD Davison, so they could conceivably sign Bassey if they wanted to. However, doing so would push them back over the second apron, so the front office needs to determine if that’s a worthwhile move for them.

Kristaps Porzingis and Luke Kornet are both gone, and Al Horford is likely following them out the exit door, so the C’s could use some help at the center position. Bassey is undersized, but he showed during Boston’s Summer League action that he can still make an impact.

Other moves may need to be made in order for Bassey’s return to be considered a possibility. Should Brad Stevens and the front office come calling, though, it sounds like Bassey would be open to hearing what they have to say.
