Starting Monday, a sidewalk and roadway construction project will see sections of Market Street closed between Front and Sixth streets, for the next three months, PennDOT officials said.
According to PennDOT, the westbound lane of Market Street — from Second to Sixth streets — will be closed and traffic will be detoured to Arch Street to permit crews to do roadway and and sidewalk construction work.
There will also be lane closures as traffic along eastbound Market Street will be changed from two lanes between Sixth and Fifth streets to one lane between Fifth and Front streets.
However, officials said, businesses in the region will remain open during this construction process.
Also, SEPTA stations and bus stops in the area will remain open. However, there will be some temporary elevator and staircase closures, officials said.
Bus riders were advisers to check signage and alerts at SEPTA.org/alerts to see if their line is impacted by the construction project.
The Navy Yard shuttle, officials said, will stop at 6th and Market streets. There will be updates for this shuttle at navyyard.org.
These closures and the detour will be in place for three months and, officials said, there will be construction fences and lanes re-opened as work is completed.
Throughout this project, officials said, there will be new curbs, sidewalks, ADA ramps, a sidewalk-level bike lane, and bus stop bump outs created in the area.
Also, officials said, electrical and fiber optic work will be done for new traffic signals, as well.
