CHICAGO — A mix of Democratic lawmakers from Illinois and Texas met in Chicago Monday for a press conference slamming republicans’ effort to redraw congressional districts in Texas.

It aims to shift five seats to Republicans, a move that would bolster the party’s narrow majority, an effort which was pushed by President Donald Trump, ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

With the redistricting map at the center of this political standoff, Texas Democrats say this isn’t just about lines on a map, it’s about history, representation, and respect.

From Chicago, members of the San Antonio delegation are making their presence known and they’re not holding back.

The Texas House is set to reconvene Tuesday at 1 p.m., but unless enough Democrats return to the chamber, no vote can move forward. And every day they stay away, each legislator is fined $500, a cost they say is worth it.
