Fort Worth was into burgers before burgers were cool. The city has a long burger tradition thanks to storied old-timers like Fred’s and Kincaid’s.
Maybe that’s why it is finally coming around to smash burgers, a buzzy cheeseburger burger known for its flattened, crispy edges that has emerged as a hot trend in the past year.
The smash burger craze first emerged at pop-ups in the midwest in 2017, but the origins are said to stretch back further than that. According to The Daily Meal, back in the 1950s, a Kentucky restaurant called Dairy Cheer used a can of beans to smash a patty, and found it had more flavor.
Here are five restaurants to get a great smash burger in Fort Worth:
The Bearded Lady
Gastropub from restaurateur Shannon Osbakken hosts “smash burger Wednesdays” featuring $5 smash burgers. Burgers come with two patties topped with American cheese, pickles, diced onions, and smash sauce (Thousand Island dressing) on a fluffy bun.
Gusto’s
Burger bar on the Near Southside specializes in double patty smash burgers. In its former food truck mode, it was a smashburger pioneer and continues its smashburger reign in the former Bearded Lady space. They have several burgers and sliders such as the backyard burger with bacon, lettuce, tomato, American cheese, and Best Maid pickles; and the It Is Possible burger, a vegetarian burger with an Impossible patty, caramelized onions, pickles, and chipotle vegan aioli.
NADC Burger
Cheeseburger chain that stands for “Not a Damn Chance” is tucked inside the Fort Worth comedy club Big Laugh. NADC got its start as a walk-up stand in Austin. Their menu is small and centered entirely on a Texas Wagyu smashburger with two patties, American cheese, sauce, onion, pickle, and NADC seasoning.
Mick’s Smash n Dash
Small roadside burger stand at 14401 US-377 uses black Angus beef patties pressed with a hot griddle and the choice of a single, double, or triple patty. They offer 20 topping options including ranch, jalapenos, bacon, and onions.
Sumo Smash
Japanese restaurant in north Fort Worth puts their own Asian spin on smash burgers with the Tokyo Lights, a smashburger topped with braised pork belly, enoki mushrooms, and sate mayo. (They also offer a classic option topped with pickle, lettuce, and tomato.)
