Introduced in Ultimate X-Men #3, Natsu Tsukishima lived with her parents in Kirisaki City, where she attended Irodori High School and became close friends with the likes of Nico Minoru and Mori. Unfortunately, Natsu was also enrolled in the Children of the Atom, a religious institution serving as a front for a dangerous mutant supremacist cult. Natsu did her best to keep both her powers and her affiliation with the Children of the Atom secret, yet the truth would eventually come out, nearly driving a deep wedge between her and her friends.
While Natsu has made great strides in overcoming her adversities and carving out a path of her own in spite of objectively untoward influences, that hasn’t kept her from suffering because of them. In Ultimate X-Men #10, things came to a head when Natsu lost control of her powers while being berated and belittled by her mother. After one stray blast from her eye went through the door separating the two of them, Natsu’s mother slumped over dead, which only caused the young mutant to lose control of her powers even further.
Just a couple of issues after accidentally killing her mother, Natsu found the resolve to join in the fight against Shinobu Kageyama, who has himself become a vessel for the interdimensional entity known as the Shadow King. Alongside Nico Minoru and Mori, Natsu did everything possible to bring about an end to the Shadow King’s reign of terror on their world. Though they weren’t able to stop the Shadow King from returning later on to possess their friend and ally, Hisako Ichiki, better known as Armor, the young mutant heroes were able to free her from the villain’s grasp once and for all.
