SAN ANTONIO – As you can see in the exclusive video below, a fast-moving brush fire near Applewhite Road and Silver Mountain Drive has scorched at least 300 acres and is 50% contained, prompting emergency evacuations in the area.
Authorities issued a mass notification alert this afternoon, instructing residents to evacuate immediately. So far, 30 homes have been evacuated, and officials are urging others in the fire’s path to leave without delay.
Evacuees are being directed to Elmendorf City Hall, which is serving as a temporary shelter.
The Texas A&M Forest Service has named the fire the Silver Mountain fire, according to their website. As of 8:45 p.m., the fire has grown to 300 acres and is 50% contained.
According to the Bexar County ESD No. 2 Assistant Fire Chief Mark Montgomery, the fire began around 2:45 p.m. from a controlled burn that had quickly blown out of control and was spreading towards nearby vehicles and homes.
One firefighter has been treated on the scene for heat exhaustion. No civilians or known pets and livestock have been injured.
