The Vancouver Police Department says a suspect has been charged following a string of unprovoked stranger assaults in downtown over the weekend.

In a news release, police said the first incident occurred at around 11:30 a.m. on Aug. 3, when a 40-year-old man was walking near Granville and West Pender Street, when a stranger approached him and allegedly pushed him several times, and then walked away.

A few moments later, the suspect allegedly walked up to a couple on Granville Street and violently threw one of them to the ground.

The victim of the second attack has been identified as a 30-year-old woman visiting from Germany. She was sent to hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

The suspect fled from the scene on foot, and VPD says witnesses chased him into a nearby lane and held him until police arrived and arrested him.

He’s been identified as 29-year-old Daniel James Johnny and has been charged with assault by choking and two counts of assault. Johnny remains in custody.
