PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The extreme heat stretch we are going through can be dangerous not only for people and pets, but also for plants.
So, to get some tips on how to keep your plants and trees in your yard happy and healthy, Arizona’s Family stopped by Whitfill Nursery in Phoenix.
“When you jump from 102 to 115 all at once, that quick jump in temperature is really what does the damage. They just don’t have a way to get ready for it,” said Matthew Whitfill.
Some tips Whitfall gives to help people keep their plants healthy include:
- Give them enough water
- Give them shade
“The main thing is water. I mean, you really can’t stress enough how important water is,” said Whitfill.
It’s recommended you water your plants earlier in the morning, so they are hydrated before the hottest part of the day hits.
There is such a thing as overwatering, though. Whitfill says a good rule of thumb is to make sure the ground, or pot, is dry before you start watering.
Signs that plants are in need of more water? Whitfill says they’ll start to wilt and the leaves will curl up, similar to a taco shell.
