Five soldiers were wounded at Fort Stewart in Georgia after the US Army base’s commander reported an active shooter and placed the sprawling compound on lockdown for a little more than an hour Wednesday.

The soldiers were treated at the scene and transported to Winn Army Community Hospital, according to an update from Fort Stewart just before 1 p.m.

The same post said the shooter — who law enforcement sources told CNN was also a soldier — was apprehended around 40 minutes after the lockdown was declared, and there was no “active threat to the community.”

The lockdown began at 11:04 a.m. in areas of the base, including Wright and Evans Army Airfield and the Fort Stewart Schools, with officials advising those on site to remain inside and close and lock all windows and doors.

Three on-base schools, including Kessler Elementary School, Murray Elementary School, and Diamond Elementary School, were also locked down during the incident, Superintendent Brian Perry announced in a statement.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said President Trump was briefed on the shooting and was monitoring the situation.

The FBI’s Savannah office issued a statement saying it was aware of the incident and “coordinating with the Army Criminal Investigation Division for any assistance that might be needed.”

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp issued a statement that he was “saddened” by the “tragedy” at Fort Stewart, and assured that his administration has been in close contact with law enforcement personnel on the ground.

“We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that all Georgians do the same.”

Fort Stewart is the largest US Army installation east of the Mississippi River, covering some 280,000 acres (437 square miles, or 93% the size of New York City) in southeast Georgia, and serving as home to the 3rd Infantry Division as well as a training area for a number of other military units.

More than 10,000 soldiers, Army civilian employees, and their families live at the base, which is located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah.

The base was the site of another shooting in 2022 in which infantryman Shay Wilson, 28, of Queens, shot and killed 30-year-old Sgt. Nathan Hillman, an Afghan War vet, inside one of the fort building complexes. Wilson’s murder case is still pending.
