With Jayson Tatum likely ruled out for the entirety of the 2025-26 NBA season, Jaylen Brown will be afforded the opportunity to step into a leading role for the Boston Celtics. In recent years, Brown has been Boston’s second option on offense, playing off of Tatum and the gravity he brings to the court. Now, though, he will be tasked with unlocking the Celtics’ offense, which will likely mean a shift in how Joe Mazzulla approaches games.
Unlike Tatum, Brown is at his best when pressuring the rim or working out of the mid-range. He’s not a perimeter-based scorer, although he’s more than capable of knocking down deep bombs. Brown will likely look to create for others on the drive, punishing a rotating or collapsing defense with kickouts to open shooters or secondary cutters. On defense, Brown will likely assume the role as the primary point-of-attack defender following the departure of Jrue Holiday earlier this summer.

With such a wide-ranging and key role, Brown could be due for a breakout season. In a recent video by the “Backyard Buckets” YouTube channel, the host broke down why Brown is being positioned for success and how he can thrive in his new, but likely temporary, role within the Celtics’ offensive and defensive system.
