STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The median New York household brings in nearly $85,000 in income each year, but certain parts of the state see residents earning much more, or in some cases much less, than those living elsewhere.

The Advance/SILive.com recently analyzed data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2023 American Community Survey 5-year estimates to determine which New York counties have the highest- and lowest-earning residents.

The data showed that the median household income across New York was $84,578.

There were six counties with median household incomes exceeding $100,000, including top-ranked Nassau County, where the median household income was $143,408.

The other five counties to exceed $100,000 were Suffolk ($128,329), Putnam ($127,405), Westchester ($118,411), Rockland ($110,631) and New York ($104,553).

Richmond County, which covers Staten Island, ranked eighth in the state with a median household income of $98,290, the second-highest of any New York City borough behind on New York County, which covers Manhattan.

Queens had the third-highest median household income of any borough, 12th-highest of any county, at $84,961.

Kings County, which represents Brooklyn, ranked fourth among the boroughs and 17th among all state counties at $78,548.

The Bronx ranked dead last among all New York counties with a median household income of $49,036, making it the only county with a median income below $50,000.

Here’s a look at the median household income in each New York county, ranked from highest to lowest.
