The City Council Friday requested staff to identify funding for the restoration of a mobile shower program for unhoused residents.
In a unanimous vote, council members instructed the City Administrative Officer, sanitation department and Board of Public Works to identify $5.7million for the Mobile Hygiene Centers Program. Dollars for the initiative were reduced during the 2025-26 budget process and allocated for street encampment cleanups known as Comprehensive Cleaning and Rapid Engagement, or Care+ program.
Councilman Hugo Soto-Martinez is leading an effort to fully restore the hygiene centers. Through the program, Shower of Hope offers private shower rooms in trailers, allowing unhoused residents to take hot showers in a dignified manner. It also provides an opportunity for homeless service providers to connect with unhoused individuals and offer them supportive services and housing.
“These mobile showers provide hygiene, in addition to being a critical first point of contact for unhoused Angelenos to access services and begin the path toward permanent housing and stability,” Soto-Martinez said in a statement. “This motion is about finding additional funding to continue this program at locations across the city.’
Additionally, the council instructed city staff to report on any potential cost savings that can be made to continue the program or implement a modified version of it.
