The San Diego Museum of Art and MOPA@SDMA are rolling out an impressive photography lineup that’s got us genuinely excited about spending more time in Balboa Park.
Two new exhibitions opening this month showcase everything from mid-20th-century American photography to the gritty beauty of California through European eyes.
Mid-Century Photography Gets Its Due
“Shifting Visions: Photographs from the Collection of Ken and Jacki Widder” is now open at MOPA@SDMA and promises to be a comprehensive dive into how photographers shaped our perception of modern culture.
The collection spans photojournalism, architectural studies, and works that push toward abstraction—basically everything that made mid-20th-century photography so dynamic and influential.
What makes this exhibition particularly compelling is how it explores both individual artists’ careers and broader themes like urban environments and “environmental” portraiture. It’s the kind of show that gives us context for understanding how photography evolved from simple documentation to genuine artistic expression.
California Through Different Lenses
“John Gutmann & Max Yavno: California Photographers” takes over Gallery 14/15 (the free gallery near Panama 66) with a fascinating contrast in perspectives.
Gutmann fled Germany and brought a distinctly European viewpoint to his often disorienting urban scenes, while Yavno captured California through a more direct, sociologically driven American lens.
The beauty of pairing these photographers lies in how their different approaches highlight the creative tension that made California such a fertile ground for photography during this era.
One artist’s outsider perspective paired with another’s insider observations creates a fuller picture of what California represented during its mid-century transformation.
New Ways to Connect
The museum is also launching Photo Forum in September, a new member group focused specifically on supporting photography programming. Members get private tours, annual programming highlights, and Friend-level membership benefits—perfect for anyone who wants to dive deeper into the photography scene.
They’re also introducing Member Mornings at MOPA@SDMA, starting September 20 with the Widder collection exhibition. Coffee, conversation, and curated photography viewing sounds like an ideal Saturday morning in Balboa Park.
