Remember when the Detroit Lions had the promising running back duo of D’Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams? Well, the two could reunite together in Chicago.

Swift signed with the Chicago Bears on three-year deal last year, and now, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Williams worked out for the Bears on Saturday. Of course, both would be reuniting with former Lions offensive coordinator—and now Bears head coach—Ben Johnson.

Back in 2021 and 2022, all three were together with the Lions and created a somewhat formidable rushing attack. Particularly in 2022, when Johnson took over as offensive coordinator, Swift and Williams combined for a total of 1,608 rushing yards and 22 rushing touchdowns. That year, the Lions finished 11th in rushing yards as a team, third in rushing touchdowns and 15th in yards per carry. That year, Williams set the Lions’ single-season record for rushing touchdowns in a season (17).

It’s been a rough go for both Swift and Williams after their post-Lions career, though. Swift actually had a strong year for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022, playing in 16 games and reaching 1,000 yards for the first time in his career. However, Philly opted to move on the following year—landing Saquon Barkley, instead—and Swift had the least efficient NFL season in Chicago, averaging just 3.8 yards per carry. That said, Swift has answered some durability questions he had in Detroit, missing just a single game over the past two seasons.

The drop-off has been much more pronounced for Williams. After failing to come to an agreement with the Lions, Williams signed a three-year deal with the New Orleans Saints. There, he only made five starts in 27 game appearances and managed just 470 rushing yards and two touchdowns over two seasons. The Saints opted to release him in March of this year, and Williams has been a free agent since.

It’s unclear if the Bears intend on reuniting him with Swift and Johnson, but if Chicago does sign Williams, he’ll have to contend with Roschon Johnson, Travis Homer, and rookie Kyle Monangai (among others) for a roster spot.
