Playing in the rain is something toddlers and elephants have in common—they both love it! When my boys were little, they loved wearing big rubber boots and stomping in rain puddles, and who knew that pachyderms do the same thing—minus the boots, of course!
Kamili, a 4-year-old African elephant, showed off her love for the rain in a recent video posted by the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust on TikTok. One viewer described the clip perfectly, saying, “They really live in the moment, don’t they? Lovely to see.”
In the beginning, we get a full visual of Kamili and the soothing sounds of the pouring rain. She sucks up a trunk full of water and flings it off to the side before taking in a second round and spraying it up on top of her head.
The young elephant does this several times, and as the puddles form, we can see how much she enjoys getting her feet wet too. Kamili is obviously a water baby at heart and loves the sound of the water splashing on the ground as she dramatically sprays it from her trunk in all directions.
Although Kamili is the main subject of the video—and she wouldn’t have it any other way—we can see that the other elephants in the herd are thoroughly enjoying the massive rainstorm as well.

Another Sheldrick Wildlife Trust follower commented, “Kamili’s journey from the brink of death to health is truly inspiring. Her independent spirit and resilience remind us of the strength that can emerge from even the toughest situations. What a beautiful and unique elephant!”
We couldn’t agree more. Kamili was rescued from a drought situation and was near death when she was saved. Now to see her dancing in the rain is definitely a full-circle moment.
Why Do Elephants Like Water?
Aside from drinking it, water plays a vital role in the livelihood of elephants. They use it for hydration and to keep themselves cool. Since these extra-large mammals tend to live in extremely hot climates, water helps them regulate their temperature through evaporation. Pachyderms also love the social aspect of playing in the rain—no umbrella needed!
