The MVP of the Ovi Cup gala match was an Ovechkin, just not the one we’re used to seeing all over the scoresheet.

Instead, Alex Ovechkin’s six-year-old son, Sergei Ovechkin, dominated the friendly game on the final day of the youth tournament. Sergei scored four goals at Mytishchi Arena in Moscow while his dad netted just one in their team’s 11-7 win over Pavel Datsyuk’s squad.

Ovi Jr., as he’s affectionately called, notched half of his points in the first period alone.

Sergei potted his first-period brace against New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin, set up with prime centering passes from his teammates, including Minnesota Wild star Kirill Kaprizov. The assist from Kaprizov is a bit of a full-circle moment as Kaprizov played the role of babysitter for Ovi Jr. during the 2023 All-Star weekend.

The elder Ovechkin’s trademark tooth-gapped smile was as wide as ever from the bench as he watched his son score goal after goal. Sergei’s mother, Nastya, and his grandmother, Tatyana, were also seen in the stands cheering the Ovechkin boys on.

“Of course, I am happy for my son, I see his progress, as well as Ilya’s,” Ovechkin told Match TV. “We will do everything so that Sergei continues in the same spirit. Many thanks to the participants. They came at the first call. This is a holiday for children. Next year will be much better.”

Sergei, a 2036 NHL Draft-eligible hockey player, has been on skates for a few years after getting on the ice for the first time in December 2020. Saturday’s game was the third in a row that he has skated in at the Ovi Cup.

In addition to the Ovechkins, other Russian NHL stars participated in the match. Matvei Michkov recorded two goals for Team Ovechkin while Kaprizov added one of his own. Evgeni Malkin notched a hat-trick of his own for Team Datsyuk.

“Everything was great, the match was friendly, buddies on and off the ice,” Datsyuk told Match TV’s Stepan Karpushin postgame. “We needed to defend another Ovi, but it didn’t work out.”

Other notable participants in the game included Vyacheslav Fetisov, Valeri Kamensky, Roman Rotenberg, Evgeni Plushenko, Alexei Morozov, Dmitry Sychev, Sergei Konkov, Alexander Guskov, Dmitry Orlov, Andrei Nikolishin, Mikhail Sergachev, Kamil Gadzhiev, Kirill Marchenko, Egor Zamula, and Dmitry Simashev.

The Ovi Cup is an annual youth hockey tournament named after the Washington Capitals captain and features 24 youth teams from Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan.

The CSKA youth team was this year’s champions, defeating the Ak Bars youth team in the final. Ovechkin personally presented them with their trophy.

Saturday’s game was Ovechkin’s second this summer, following his appearance and goal in the “Match of the Year” on July 13 at CSKA Arena.

In past years, the Ovi Cup has been Ovechkin’s last official on-ice action in Russia before he returns to DC for Capitals training camp.
