The New York City civil service exam schedule is open for August, and some jobs pay more than others.
The application period for exams opened Aug. 6.
Exam applications currently open include: administrative community relations specialist; associate public information specialist; motor vehicle operator (NYC H+H); police officer; stationary engineer; stationary engineer (CUNY); and stationary engineer (NYC H+H).
The starting salary for each career varies, according to the city.
Open, competitive, computer-based tests are administered throughout each month for various positions. If you meet the basic requirements of the job, you can apply for your exam online at Online Application System or at one of the Computer-Based Testing and Application Centers.
The deadline for most exams is Aug. 26. The exam deadline for police officer is Aug. 14.
Additionally, the application for call center representative remains open through Aug. 26.

Administrative community relations specialist
Salary: Salaries will be consistent with the level of responsibility of the assignment, according to DCAS.

Job description: Administrative Community Relations Specialists, under general or executive direction, with wide latitude for the exercise of independent initiative, judgement and decision-making, are responsible for planning, developing, coordinating, evaluating and/or administering programs which promote effective community relations and are responsive to problems in areas such as housing and development, transportation, education, health and environmental protection, public benefits access and social services; coordinating, evaluating and administering a health education program to meet the needs of poverty area residents; managing a program involving community organization or development and coordinating its integration with other functions being performed within a large human services agency; directing a major activity or program of the agency in which a number of diverse or complex functions must be integrated; and evaluating for quality, effectiveness and the meeting of community needs, all programs which deal with matters such as addiction services and police-community relations.
Associate public information specialist
Salary: $42,761

Motor vehicle operator (NYC H+H)
Salary: $44,979

Job description: Motor Vehicle Operators (NYC Health + Hospitals), under supervision, operate motor vehicles such as passenger cars, ambulettes, vans, hearses, trucks, wreckers, forklifts, and tractor-trailer trucks. In a small garage/fleet, they may dispatch personnel, motor vehicles, and equipment. Motor Vehicle Operators (NYC H+H) may drive a truck carrying employees and material to and from work locations or act as a chauffeur for an official. Motor Vehicle Operators (NYC H+H) check the tires, oil, and fuel of the vehicle, replenish fluids as needed, and check to see that the lights, horn, and brakes appear to be operating properly. They change tires or wheels; assist in the loading and unloading of materials, equipment, and passengers; operate motorized equipment that is mounted on, or transported by, the vehicle; are responsible for tools, supplies, materials, and equipment carried in or on the assigned vehicle; prepare trip reports.
Police officer

Job description: Police Officers perform general police duties and related work in the New York City Police Department including connecting and building relationships with the community.
