WILMINGTON – Penn Medicine, also known as the University of Pennsylvania Health System, is planning on opening its first medical facility in Delaware.
Penn Medicine is considering investing in a $10.6 million diagnostic imaging center at 3505 Silverside Road in New Castle County’s Concord Plaza, according to a notice of intent filed with the Delaware Health Resources Board. This new imaging center would be in an existing 7,865 square-foot office on the first floor of an existing medical office off U.S. Route 202.
It will feature equipment such as MRI and conventional CT scanners, as well as other equipment, according to the notice reviewed by the Delaware Business Times through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.
The office site itself comes in at about 91,784 square feet, however, the university plans on leasing just under half of that square footage at about 40,000 square feet. The health care system will bring primary and diagnostic care to the area, as well as other services, according to a Penn Medicine spokesperson who said plans were still in preliminary stages.
While the notice stated that the facility is about two miles from the Delaware and Pennsylvania border, the organization anticipates that most of its patients will come from New Castle County. It is about 20 miles away from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
“The applicant has identified that a substantial proportion of its existing patient population resides in Delaware and travels to out of state locations for radiology services,” it reads. The organization plans on submitting the application for a certificate of public review in September.
The organization is familiar with medical care in the First State as many of its patients travel across state lines for care. Since 2008, Penn Medicine has also had a long-standing affiliation with Bayhealth Cancer Care, allowing patients to benefit from shared knowledge and resources at the Abramson Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania as members of the Penn Cancer Network.
“Penn Medicine is always focused on ensuring convenient, close-to-home care for our patients, including through strategic projects that provide access in new areas of the region we serve,” Penn Medicine spokesperson wrote in an email to DBT.
