INGRAM, Texas — In a heartfelt gathering, Governor Greg Abbott and Texas Emergency Management Chief Nim Kidd met with flood survivors in Ingram, offering support to those who lost everything but their lives.
“Those here today are among the worst hit. And we’re here today to help you with those needs,” said Abbott.
Survivors who filed claims with FEMA received checks from the more than $7 million raised during Texas country legend George Strait’s benefit concert.
Kidd noted the unprecedented speed at which victims received funds, attributing it to the spirit of “Texans helping Texans.”
One survivor recounted the harrowing experience of escaping the floodwaters: “We had to swim out of our living room window and he grabbed the first tree we came to and just held on to it for almost two hours. Yep. Got down and started helping people in the neighborhood. And it was amazing how many people came out to help each other. Community coming together strong. Very strong. No hesitation. Just go do it. Wonderful place to live.”
While the exact amount each family received remains unclear, Abbott described the aid as a “big downpayment” as residents begin to rebuild their lives.
“I don’t care if it’s a dollar or a million dollars, it means the same,” said one recipient, emphasizing the significance of the gesture.
Officials assured that this is just the beginning, with more financial assistance expected to be tailored to meet the evolving needs of those affected by the floods.
