Louise Delia Howe
OBITUARY
Louise Howe, lifelong resident of Chicago and dedicated editor, passed away peacefully on June 19 at the age of 88. Born in Chicago on Sept. 5, 1936, Louise’s life was a testament to her sharp intellect, unwavering faith and adventurous spirit.
Louise graduated from Lindholm Math and Science Academy High School in 1954 before earning a bachelor’s degree in english and Journalism from Grinnell College in 1958. Her passion for education and precision led her to a lifelong career at Scott Foresman Publishing, where she worked as a beloved mathematics book editor.
A devout member of the Fourth Presbyterian Church in downtown Chicago, Louise served as a deacon and was deeply involved in the church community. Her thirst for knowledge extended beyond her professional life, as she was a proud member of Mensa, attending conventions around the country. Her love for learning also fueled a passion for travel and history, leading her to participate in archeological digs in Africa and Europe. She often returned with unique trinkets and stories for her niece and nephew, a testament to her generous and thoughtful nature.
Louise dedicated herself to caring for her parents, Jessie and Wilfred Howe, throughout their lives. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Charles Howe. She is survived by her loving niece, Rachael Howe, nephew, Wesley (Gail) Howe and great-nephews, Jack and Paul Howe.
Louise was a familiar and cherished face in her downtown neighborhood near Loyola University and the Magnificent Mile. She was a passionate reader, spending countless hours at the Newberry Library where she volunteered. She also found great joy in exploring the city’s cultural treasures, particularly the Field Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago.
A memorial service will be held on Aug. 25 at 11 a.m. at the Fourth Presbyterian Church in downtown Chicago.
