Buffalo Bills vs. New York Giants in NFL preseason: Aug. 9, 2025
Final: Giants 34, Bills 25
Mitchell Trubisky played the first half; Mike White played most of the second.
Both led touchdown drives, with White probably getting the better grade based on the quality of player around him.
White led touchdown drives of 45 and 73 yards, including a methodical eight-play series in which he hit running back Darrynton Evans on back-to-back throws, then capped the sequence with a pretty back-shoulder throw to Laviska Shenault Jr. for the 2-point conversion.
The two are competing to be the primary backup to Josh Allen, who got the day off.
Most of the Buffalo’s starters — the healthy ones and the ones not in the middle of a contract dispute — only played about one quarter.
Joey Bosa and Ed Oliver flashed up front for the Bills. Keon Coleman was targeted on the first drive, but the play was wiped out because a pre-snap penalty. Coleman, who has had a dynamite camp, had a quiet day.
Deone Walker, Joe Andreessen and Jordan Hancock are young defensive players at all three levels of the defense that came out of Saturday’s game with good tape.
Tyrell Shavers continued to show why he’s going to be a hard roster decision. Shavers hauled in a 58-yard completion in the final moments of the first half to set up a late field goal.
And, maybe most importantly, the Bills got out of their first preseason game with no more injuries. Slot corner Taron Johnson left the game early after getting shaken up, but he cleared concussion protocol during the game.
The Bills hit the road for joint practices with Chicago next week before their second preseason game against the Bears.

Pregame
Buffalo opens its 2025 preseason schedule with its only home game inside Highmark Stadium.
The Bills are getting plenty of airtime this preseason on HBO’s “Hard Knocks”, though Saturday’s game will mark our first real look at how the Bills’ roster depth is shaping up.
Reigning MVP quarterback Josh Allen will rest his $250 million arm, giving backups Mitch Trubisky and Mike White the majority of the snaps.
Head coach Sean McDermott said earlier in the week most of the team’s other starters are expected to play for about a quarter.
Even that plan entails running out a patchwork lineup, as several projected starters have been in and out of the lineup throughout training camp, running back James Cook has been holding himself out of practice amid a contract dispute and top receiver Khalil Shakir is sidelined with a high-ankle sprain.
Here’s a list of more inactives for Buffalo:
- Saf. Taylor Rapp (knee)
- CB Maxwell Hairston (knee)
- LB Shaq Thompson (hamstring)
- OL Sedrick Van Pran-Granger (calf)
- OL Tylan Grable (concussion)
- OL Alec Anderson (knee)
- RT Spencer Brown (back)
Cook is dressed for the game.
A friendly reminder to Bills fans: The team went 1-2 last preseason, didn’t score a touchdown in two of its three games and went on to come within a drive of the Super Bowl.
Former Syracuse quarterback Tommy DeVito is expected to suit up for New York, though it’s unclear how much playing time he’ll receive.
Russell Wilson will reportedly get the start at quarterback for the Giants, and most fans will be eagerly watching the debut of rookie Jaxson Dart. DeVito and Jameis Winston are the other QBs on the roster.
