The Red Wolf Recovery Program on the North Carolina coast
has confirmed the birth of four wild litters of red wolf pups on the Albemarle
Peninsula.

On Friday, representatives with the Defenders of Wildlife
announced the latest addition to the endangered population.

“This continued growth in the wild population is a testament
to the hard work and dedication of the Service and its partners, and to
nature’s resilience,” said Heather Clarkson, Southeast outreach representative
at Defenders of Wildlife. “Red Wolves are survivors, and with public support
and space to roam, they can flourish.”

The Albemarle Peninsula is home to the only population of
wild red wolves in the whole country.

Five red wolf pairs are spread across the peninsula with an
estimated population of 18 adults and 10 to 12 pups.

Red wolves are a critically endangered species.
