An underrated sci-fi epic starring ChloĆ« Grace Moretz and Sons of Anarchy’s Maggie Siff is lighting up the streaming charts.
Per FlixPatrol, the 2016 young-adult science-fiction action epic The 5th Wave has officially feached the number six spot on the list of the top ten streaming movies on Netflix in the United States. This comes after jumping up from the number eight position on the chart on August 7 to the number three spot, only to be knocked back down by fan-favorite new releases such as KPop Demon Hunters and the long-awaited Happy Gilmore 2.
Based on Rick Yancey’s 2013 young-adult sci-fi novel of the same name, The 5th Wave was directed by J Blakeson from a screenplay by Susanna Grant, Jeff Pinkner, and the legendary Akiva Goldsman. The film stars Moretz as Cassie Sullivan, a high school student from Ohio whose world is overrun by alien invaders known as the Others. Over the course of four waves of attack, the Others disabled nearly all technology on Earth, let loose numerous cataclysmic earthquakes and tsunamis, unleashed a devastating strain of avian flu, and even began possessing individual humans to use as unfeeling warrior vessels.
Over the course of the film, Moretz and other young adults undergo military training to prepare for the impending, eponymous fifth wave of attack. Among these are Nick Robinson’s Ben Parish and Zackary Arthur’s Sam Sullivan. The film’s leading cast also includes Ron Livingston, Maggie Siff, Alex Roe, Maria Bello, Maika Monroe, and Liev Schreiber. Although the film boasted some serious star power, and brought in more than $109 million at the box office against its nearly $54 million budget, The 5th Wave was widely panned by both critics and audiences.

While The 5th Wave stands as an abject dud in Moretz’s largely stellar resume, it hasn’t stopped her from starring in any other hit films like 2018’s Suspiria or 2023’s Nimona. Later this year, fans can look forward to seeing Moretz return to the silver screen for the upcoming Christmas comedy, Oh. What. Fun., by writer-director Michael Showalter and co-writer Chandler Baker. The film, set to arrive in theaters on December 3, will star Moretz alongside Michelle Pfeiffer’s Claire Clauster, a woman who goes missing just ahead of Christmas, leaving her family to not only wonder where she went, but who will provide this year’s Christmas magic and bring the whole holiday together.
The 5th Wave is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
