A 25-year-old man is in serious condition after receiving an electric shock on the PATH tracks in Hoboken early Sunday while attempting to retrieve his dropped phone, authorities said.

The man came into contact with the third rail, which carries high-voltage electricity to power the trains, as he tried to retrieve his phone. He unconscious on the tracks when Port Authority police arrived at 1:55 a.m., the agency said in a statement.

Power to the third rail was shut off. The victim was removed from the tracks, stabilized, and brought to an area hospital. He is in serious but stable condition.

Normal service at the station resumed at about 4 a.m.

The incident remains under investigation.
