Capturing a video is one thing, but telling a complete story is another. As a content creator and memory keeper, I have always been frustrated by having to choose what to focus on.

If you are in the same boat and ever wished you could capture the moment from all angles at once, you know the struggle of choosing between filming the action in front of you or your reaction to it.

That’s exactly why I always reach for my Samsung Galaxy S24 to record videos, even though I have a Pixel 8 and iPhone 15 Pro Max lying in the drawer.

It’s all thanks to one incredible feature called Dual Rec, which lets me record with both the front and rear cameras.

What exactly is Dual Rec, anyway?

Before I go over why I use Dual Rec, let’s understand the basics of it.

Dual Rec, or Dual Recording, is a specific camera feature on Galaxy phones that allows you to record a video using two cameras at the same time. This feature is a powerful tool for a few key reasons.

Instead of choosing between showing the main subject and my reaction, Dual Rec captures both perspectives in a single video file.

This is perfect for vlogging, reaction videos, or documenting a specific event, such as a child’s first step or a concert.

It offers different layouts for the final video, such as a split-screen view or a picture-in-picture mode where my selfie camera feed appears in a smaller window on top of the main rear camera view (my preferred method).

Overall, Dual Rec transforms my phone from a single camera into a multi-camera setup, all in one easy-to-use mode. It’s an evolution of Samsung’s previous Director’s View feature, but with more customization options.

Why I use Dual Rec on my Galaxy phone

For me, the true magic of the Dual Rec feature on my Galaxy phone is that it solves a problem every parent faces: How to capture a once-in-a-lifetime moment without missing your own heartfelt reaction.

When my little one took their first steps, I didn’t have to choose between a shaky video of them across the room or a blurry selfie of my tear-filled eyes. With Dual Rec, I captured both.

The video shows my child’s first steps in the main frame, while a smaller picture-in-picture window simultaneously captures my gasps of surprise and huge smile. It’s a video I can watch back and feel all over again.

The same goes for their school plays or a dance party in the living room. I get to document their joy and my pride in the same frame.

This feature isn’t just for family moments, though. It proved invaluable on a recent trip to Disney World.

I was standing in front of the castle, completely mesmerized by the fireworks. Thanks to Dual Rec, I was able to record the entire stunning display – the brilliant colors, the explosive sounds, and the magical atmosphere – while also capturing my jaw-dropping reaction.

When I watch that video now, I don’t just see the fireworks. I see my face illuminated by the light and relive that unforgettable moment.

Unlocking creative possibilities

While I love using Dual Rec to capture my reaction alongside a special moment, that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the creative possibilities.

What makes this feature a creative powerhouse is how Samsung has evolved it. On newer models, I can go beyond just the front and back cameras. I can combine different rear cameras to capture two zoom levels at once.

For example, when I’m at a concert, I can use the wide-angle lens to get a full shot of the stage and the crowd. This gives me incredible flexibility.

Even better, on some of the latest Galaxy devices, Samsung takes it a step further by offering the option to save the two camera feeds as separate video files.

This is a massive advantage for anyone who wants more control in post-production. Instead of being stuck with the picture-in-picture layout, I can bring both video clips into a video editor and arrange them however I want.

I can’t wait to see how Samsung improves this feature with future updates.

Record unforgettable moments

With the Dual Rec feature, my Samsung phone goes beyond recording video. It captures the full picture, from the action happening in front of me to my own genuine reaction.

It’s a simple yet powerful tool that has completely changed the way I create content and preserve memories.

I also added the camera widget with Dual Rec shortcut on the home screen. I no longer need to launch Camera, head to More, and select Dual Rec. The option is just a tap away.

Aside from this, here are other Samsung tricks that changed how I use my Galaxy phone every day.
