Friends, family and fellow athletes on Sunday were mourning the loss of a standout Dallas ISD high school track star who died late last week.

Roy Lee Hughes Jr., 17, and a student at Lincoln High School, died Friday, according to online records from the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The student’s cause of death was not immediately disclosed publicly.

The medical examiner’s office is expected to conduct an autopsy to determine what led to the death of the student, who was set to begin his senior year of high school on Tuesday.

Lincoln High School said in an X social media post that Hughes was a “respectful young man with a heart of gold, he became a state champion through discipline humility & an unshakable commitment to his team & school.”

The teen won the UIL 4A Boys 300 hurdles title a few months ago. He also was named this year to The Dallas Morning News’ all-area track team.

Dallas police said they responded Friday around 11:55 a.m. to a call in the 1800 block of West Mockingbird Lane, where officers found an unconscious individual at the scene.

The Dallas Fire-Rescue responded and pronounced him dead at that location, police said.

Friends and family gathered Sunday to hold a balloon release to honor the teen.

Dallas police did not identify the person who died although records from the medical examiner’s office identified the teen and the location where he died.

Funeral arrangements for Hughes were not immediately disclosed.
