SAN ANTONIO — A store clerk was shot and pistol-whipped during an attempted robbery late Sunday night at a Northeast Side convenience store.

The incident happened just before 10 p.m. at a Valero gas station along Interstate 35 near North Weidner Road.

Investigators said the suspect walked into the store wearing dark-colored clothing, pulling out a handgun and threatening the female clerk.

Police said the man demanded money, holding the employee at gunpoint. In an attempt to defend herself, the clerk used pepper spray on the suspect. The suspect responded by firing a single shot, striking her in the arm, and then hitting her in the head with the gun before driving off in a black sedan.

The woman was taken to the hospital. Officials said she is expected to survive.
