Prosecutors and police will reveal on Monday how they plan to pump the brakes on street takeovers in Los Angeles after years of driving stunts, mayhem at busy intersections and other crimes stemming from the illegal gatherings that draw large crowds of spectators.
LA County District Attorney Nathan Hochman and other authorities will speak at a news conference about what’s being done to stop the takeovers, which block intersections and even freeways with drivers performing burnouts, slides and other stunts. Beyond the spectacle, some takeovers have been connected to looting by large groups of criminals at nearby stores and other crimes.
The news conference is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The higher-profile takeovers include one in July on South Main Street near Vernon Avenue in South Los Angeles that ended in looting at an Autozone store. The looters took merchandise and left broken glass and some items scattered in the store parking lot.
At least 16 citations were issued following the street takeover outside the arena. This video was broadcast on the NBC4 News at 6 p.m. on Aug. 9, 2025.
On Christmas night in 2022, a woman in her 20s was killed when she was hit by a driver in car performing donuts Hyde Park.
In April 2024, a woman was struck and injured by a vehicle in a takeover at the intersection of Manchester Avenue and San Pedro Street, where hundreds of people gathered to watch. Video released by the LAPD showed a red Infiniti G37 striking a group of people, including the woman.
A $25,000 reward was issued for information in the case.
In 2022, the Sixth Street Viaduct between Boyle Heights and downtown LA wsa closed two weeks after its celebrated opening due to bridge takeovers.
