HIDALGO, Texas – Officers have found over $600,000 of cocaine in a vehicle attempting to cross into the United States.

On Monday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Hidalgo International Bridge referred a Buick SUV attempting to cross into the U.S. from Mexico for secondary inspection.

After an inspection utilizing nonintrusive inspection equipment, as well as a K-9 team, officers began physically inspecting the vehicle.

Officers were able to find 20 packages of what they believe to be cocaine, with a combined weight of 48.45 pounds.

Investigators have given the seized cocaine an approximate street value of $647,000.

“As this latest interception clearly illustrates, our frontline CBP officers continue to work tirelessly to keep harmful narcotics off American streets,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry.

CBP seized both the narcotics and the vehicle. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) arrested the driver and launched a criminal investigation.
