MOSES LAKE — Thriving Together North Central Washington (NCW) has announced the removal of its Narcan vending machine from the Moses Lake Public Library following ongoing community discussions surrounding the initiative. The organization says it is now actively seeking an alternative location to continue offering free, life-saving opioid overdose reversal medication to the public.
“Our primary goal has always been clear: to save lives by ensuring equitable access to opioid overdose reversal medication. It was never our intention to create controversy over providing this lifesaving medication in the community,” said John Schapman, Executive Director of Thriving Together NCW. “We remain committed to working in partnership with city officials, community members, and local organizations to find an alternative path forward.”
The machine, which dispensed Narcan (naloxone) for free and anonymously, was installed at the library in November 2024 after discussions with Moses Lake city staff and NCW Libraries. Thriving Together NCW fully funded and maintained the unit, with no financial support from local government or library resources.
Since 2021, the nonprofit has worked with community partners to place Narcan vending machines across the region, resulting in more than 160 documented overdose reversals. The organization says each dispenser is part of a broader effort to destigmatize addiction and empower individuals to respond to emergencies.
“Narcan is a safe and effective medication that has been used for decades by medical professionals, first responders, and community members alike. It can be administered by anyone and poses no harm if given to someone not experiencing an overdose,” the organization said in a statement.
NCW Libraries also expressed appreciation for the past partnership. “Our libraries will always be a place where everyone can find the resources they need to improve their lives,” said Barbara Walters, Executive Director of NCW Libraries. “We look forward to continued collaboration with Thriving Together NCW and other partners who share our commitment to strengthening community health and vitality.”
Thriving Together NCW continues to explore new options for Narcan distribution in Moses Lake and encourages community members to stay engaged as it works toward a new solution.
