The bustling San Antonio beer scene is always brimming with new reasons to raise a glass. From a new festival at Back Unturned Brewing to the launch of a new Hill Country brewery, here’s the essential news every beer lover should know this August.
Black Chapel opens
Johnson City, a popular stop on the buzzy Texas Hill Country wine trail, is now home to the area’s newest brewery. Black Chapel Brewing debuted on August 8 at 6212 W US Hwy 290, next door to the Charleston Taylor Winery.
The 4,800-square-foot brewery is currently offering eight “crisp, clean” beers on tap, including the Miyagi-Oh! And Nude Pickleball. There is also a pub food menu made in-house, including pizzas, wings, calzones, salads, and mac ‘n’ cheese bites.
The kid- and pet-friendly spot also offers plenty of indoor and outdoor seating outfitted with games and television screens. It’s currently pouring pints from noon-9 pm Friday through Sunday.
Dreaming at Back Unturned
Back Unturned Brewing is asking local visitors to dream big this summer. The downtown brewer will host Dream Fest on August 30. That’s when several successful people in their respective fields of expertise will motivate others through their life experiences, lessons learned, key strategies, and pure inspiration. One of the scheduled speakers is Jeremy Affeldt, a former Major League Baseball player and a cofounder of Boerne’s Free Roam Brewing.
Dream Fest attendees will enjoy a curated four-course meal with a beer pairing and an after-meal craft cocktail. Admission is $88.64 per person and includes a meet-and-greet with the guest speakers and swag like souvenir glass and stickers.
Proceeds will benefit Broken Warriors’ Angels, a nonprofit that works to help support veterans who are houseless, disabled, or struggling after military service.
Roadmap will soon be brewing beer and coffee.Roadmap Brewing/ Facebook
Coffee talk at Roadmap
Roadmap Brewing has previously served up coffee bean-infused beers, such as the Wake Up Call, a collaborative effort with Shotgun House Coffee Roasters on the city’s West Side. Now, the downtown brewery is going all the way with java.
The owners recently renovated part of the facility to accommodate a coffee roasting program. The Roadmap team hasn’t shared an exact launch date yet, but posted that it needs baristas by late August. Once that happens, Roadmap will be offering coffee drinks to the public from 8 am-3 pm daily. Until then, hop heads can get insider info and deals through the brewery’s just-launched app.
Beer of the month
Thirsty Pups Brewery near Castle Hills is pumping out lighter fare during the dog days of summer. Their latest beer, Pils and West Coast Excellent Adventure, is a West Coast-style Pilsner that is filled with Cascade and Citra hops, resulting in a citrus, floral finish.
