LOS ANGELES (KABC) — There’s an increased effort to crack down on illegal street takeovers across Los Angeles County.

District Attorney Nathan Hochman’s office is teaming up with other agencies across the region to expand enforcement, install deterrents at intersections known for takeovers and increase youth education.

The new efforts were announced Monday, following a takeover early Saturday morning near Crypto.com Arena in downtown L.A.

Nobody was injured, but police say three young people have died in street takeovers since the start of the year.

During Monday’s news conference, one mother shared how she lost her daughter, Elyzza Guajaca.

The 24-year-old was killed in South L.A. on Christmas night in 2022. Last Friday, the driver who hit her was sentenced to 13 years in prison.

“We can try to move (on) with our lives and attempt to recover. Elyzza is our purpose and our hope. We will always remain lost without her,” said Guajaca’s mother, Loraine Guajaca.
