You can now shop for fresh strawberries, avocadoes and other groceries on Amazon and get them delivered in San Diego on the same day.

The company announced Wednesday it’s bringing the service to more than 1,000 U.S. cities and towns with plans to reach at least 2,300 locations by the end of this year.

How it works: Add the perishable food items, including frozen foods, veggies and seafood, to you cart, just as you would Amazon’s standard fare — glitter, birthday candles and vacuum cleaners. These fresh groceries get free same-day delivery on orders over $25 for Prime members. For orders that cost less than $25, the company’s Prime subscribers can pay $2.99 for same-day delivery.

Shoppers who have not signed up for Prime, Amazon’s subscription membership service, can also get same-day grocery delivery, but each order incurs a $12.99 fee.

“To get your items by 10 p.m. the same day, order in the morning, typically before noon,” Amazon’s same-day delivery website advises.

Doug Herrington, CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores, said the company is “continuously innovating” to make grocery shopping easier and cheaper for its customers.

“They can order milk alongside electronics; oranges, apples, and potatoes with a mystery novel; and frozen pizza at the same time as tools for their next home improvement project—and check out with one cart and have everything delivered to their doorstep within hours,” he said in a news release.

San Diego is part of the program’s broader rollout. In a pilot that included Phoenix, Orlando and Kansas City, the company discovered that same-day delivery introduced it to more customers who became loyal shoppers. Those shoppers “shop twice as often with Same-Day Delivery service compared to those who didn’t purchase fresh food,” the news release said.

Strawberries were a top seller in the pilot across all of Amazon’s items, both perishable and nonperishable. In the same-day grocery category, shoppers were most interested in bananas, honeycrisp apples, limes and avocados.

To keep foods fresh, the company has temperature controlled facilities and uses recyclable insulated delivery bags when items need to be kept cool. Amazon workers gives each item “a six-point quality check upon arrival and before leaving for delivery,” its news release said.

Many other San Diego retailers, including Ralphs, Target, Vons and Walmart, offer same-day grocery delivery.

Amazon has been in the grocery business for years. It owns Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh grocery stores. Amazon shoppers were able to order groceries for delivery through its Amazon Fresh program. Amazon Fresh, launched in 2007, had also offered same-day groceries and eventually expanded to include San Diego.

Here are some sample price in San Diego on one search Wednesday morning: a medium Hass avocado costs 70 cents, a pound of strawberries cost $2.49 a pound, one yellow onion costs 94 cents, cubed pineapple (32 ounces) costs $7.29, a gallon of whole milk costs $3.29, a dozen cage free eggs (grade AA) cost $3.39 and a pound of ground beef (80% lean) costs $4.43.
