Local airports have reported ground stops due to thunderstorms in the New York City area that are moving through Long Island, forecasters said.

An approaching cold front is mixing with the hot, humid air around the region Wednesday, producing showers and storms  that will likely last overnight into Thursday, the National Weather Service said.

A strong thunderstorm was continuing its path across Suffolk about 8:30 p.m. Earlier reports had winds gusting at 40 mph and pea-sized hail.

Airports throughout the Northeast, including JFK, are reporting ground stops through at least 9 p.m. due to thunderstorms in the New York City area Wednesday afternoon, according to the Federal Aviation Administration website. Departures from LaGuardia Airport are delayed an average of more than three hours due to thunderstorms, according to the FAA.

There is a “marginal” risk of storms later on Long Island, the weather service tweeted, and storms “may produce locally strong to damaging wind gusts, in addition to heavy rainfall and frequent lightning.”

Around 6:40 p.m., thunderstorms were “working through Westchester County … making their way into northeast New Jersey and New York City,” said meteorologist James Tomasini with the weather service’s Upton office.

“Those storms will be continuing to move east,” Tomasini added. Showers and isolated thunderstorms could reach “parts of northern Nassau and northern Suffolk … potentially within the next hour or so.”

The storms Wednesday have been dropping “pretty high rainfall rates,” the meteorologist said, adding rates could “potentially” exceed an inch per hour during the evening.

High temperatures of 90 degrees may fall as the storms come through within the next few hours. Then, more storms are expected overnight and into Thursday morning, the weather service said.

Thursday afternoon’s forecast calls for another chance of showers and thunderstorms, Tomasini said.

Thursday’s high will be in the mid 80s, and Friday should be slightly cooler, with abundant sunshine. The weekend is expected to be clear and sunny with temperatures in the low to mid 80s.
