Strange light observed in Iowa night skies, astronomer explains why

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – A strange light was observed in Iowa night skies Tuesday.

One astronomer provided an explanation for the light on X. Jonathan McDowell shared his expertise, writing in his post that the light was actually an upper stage rocket from the Airane 6.

The rocket launched from South America Tuesday night, and was visible across much of eastern U.S. and Canada as it orbited the North Pole, heading to a reentry over the Indian Ocean.
