Golden Retriever’s Playful Meeting With Dolphin Is ‘The Cutest Thing We’ve Seen All Day’ originally appeared on Parade Pets.
Dogs can have the cutest reactions to other animals. Sure, they’re used to seeing other canines, cats, squirrels, birds, and even an occasional raccoon. But our pups rarely get to see aquatic creatures swimming around in their natural habitat.
Donut the Golden Retriever had the opportunity to hang out at an aquarium and came across a very chatty dolphin. The perplexed pooch tried his best to understand what his new friend was saying.
In the TikTok from @it_is_a_pancake_life, Donut was lying on a ledge right in front of the large water tank. The gorgeous Golden was decked out in a hat, backpack and lime green booties for his big adventure of the day.
A friendly dolphin swam up behind the gorgeous Golden and startled him a bit. The mammal immediately opened their mouth, clearly trying to converse with the canine. Donut looked around the area as if to say, “You talkin’ to me?”
The fur baby stood up on all fours to get a good look at his new pal. The dolphin started chatting again, and almost seemed to punctuate their words. Each time the dophin said something, Donut jumped a bit. The precious pup was both fascinated and a little confused by this unique encounter.
How Do Dolphins Communicate?
Pet parents know dogs have much stronger hearing than humans. Canines can hear sounds that are 45,000 Hertz (Hz), while we hear at about 23,000 Hz.
Both humans and dogs can hear dophins, though our pups catch even those hard-to-decipher noises these mammals make and hear them with greater intensity.
Dolphins communicate through whistles, clicks, and chirps. Whistles are used to communicate with each other, where click noises are made to find food. Chirp sounds vary in frequency, though the reason they make these noises is still unknown.

Dogs often react to hearing dolphin noises through body language like sniffing in the dolphin’s direction, barking, whining, wagging their tail, and putting their ears up.
While an official playdate may be challenging to arrange, it looks like Donut has a new finned friend.
