Macon Blair’s The Toxic Avenger originally played on the festival scene two years ago, with rave early reviews giving the film a 92% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. The fresh new take on Troma’s cult classic franchise even screened during San Diego Comic-Con last month. But nobody, and we mean nobody, has actually seen the full UNRATED cut of the movie.
The version of The Toxic Avenger that played at both Fantastic Fest in 2023 and at Comic-Con last month was the “R” rated cut of the movie, and what Bloody Disgusting and Cineverse are bringing to theaters nationwide on August 29 is the brand new UNRATED cut.
But now, after years of fans demanding to see the movie, theaters have balked at the idea of showing the full Unrated cut due to its outrageous nature.
In the Unrated version of The Toxic Avenger, for example, Toxie finds himself in a unique situation where the only way to escape is to weaponize his radioactive urine and, well, piss himself out of the troubling mess. Toxie unzips and fully reveals his Monster Dong in the Unrated version of the movie, and since the moment has started leaking across Reddit and other platforms, we thought we’d spill the beans and just come right out and say it.
Butt Guts. Monster Dong. You’re getting it all. Uncut. On the big screen.
As Bloody Disgusting founder and Cineverse’s VP of Network Strategy Tom Owen explains, “Terrifier 2 and Terrifier 3 both made theaters nervous too, but that worked out pretty well for everyone. We gave Damien Leone full creative freedom to do whatever he wanted with those movies, and we feel the same way about Macon Blair and The Toxic Avenger. If we weren’t going to release the full Unrated cut, then it didn’t make sense to release the movie at all. Some studios fear pushing the limits. We welcome it and by giving filmmakers true creative freedom, we ensure their work reaches audiences in its purest, most uncompromised form.”
To that point, The Toxic Avenger had been sitting on a shelf for two years before we picked it up, with some calling the movie “unreleasable” at the time. They probably said the same thing about Troma’s Tromeo and Juliet back in 1996, which was written by James Gunn (yes, that James Gunn) and also featured a Monster Dong of its own. That’s the Troma way, after all.
Unreleasable? We feel differently. Now we just need YOU to show up to support UNRATED HORROR. Beg your theaters to play it. Check local listings and grab your tickets now.
